2018-2019 DISCIPLINE PLAN

ELEMENTARY DISCIPLINE PLAN

Discovery School 2018-2019

The Elementary teachers (Grades 2-5) have developed a common Discipline Plan, which will also be followed by the Elementary Specials teachers:

EXPECTATIONS

1. Respect

2. Responsibility
3. Good Manners

STEPS OF THE DISCIPLINE PLAN

1.VERBAL WARNING

Student is reminded of the rules and expectations of their classroom and reminded of the consequences if they continue with their poor choice of behavior.

2. FIRST CONSEQUENCE FOR POOR BEHAVIOR (Teacher/Student)

If a student’s behavior does not improve after the first verbal warning, they will be given a form of “timeout” or reflection time.  The timeout should be a quiet, secluded time of 5 minutes for the student to consider their actions away from the rest of the class, and the student should be visible by the teacher at all times.

3. SECOND CONSEQUENCE FOR POOR BEHAVIOR (Teacher/Student/Parent)

Teacher and student will meet for a conference on why the student is unable to abide by the rules and expectations of the classroom and come up with a plan to deal with the unwanted behavior.  Possible solutions include:  work time in a different classroom (with supervision) and loss of privileges. Parents should be notified by the teacher at this stage, and the Area Administrator notified with written documentation of the behavior. The teacher will place the documentation in the student’s file.

4. FINAL CONSEQUENCE FOR POOR BEHAVIOR (Teacher/Student/Parent)

If a student fails to respect the rules and expectations of the classroom after a teacher has implemented the first three steps of the discipline plan, the teacher will then make an appointment for the student to discuss their behavioral problems with the parents and teacher present.  The teacher will contact the student’s parents and explain what happened, and the difficulties the student is having with respecting the rules of the classroom, and make the appointment. At the meeting, the student should explain to the parents and the teacher the reason for the poor behavior. The area administrator should be notified at this stage with written documentation of the behavior. The teacher will place the documentation in the student’s file.

5. REFERRAL TO ADMINISTRATION (Teacher/Student/Parent/area Administrator)

If the poor behavior continues after the above steps have been applied, the student should be referred to the Area Administrator, with written documentation, who will discuss the

situation with the Head of School and an appropriate course of action will be decided upon.

The consequences may include one or a combination of the following:

(a) Conference with the Guidance Counselor.

(b) Parent Conference

(C) Conference with Head of School

(d) Behavior Contract

(e) In-School Suspension

(f) Out-of-School Suspension

(g)Other actions as determined by the Admin team and the Honduran Ministry of Education.

In the event of an extreme violation of school expectations, any of the above steps may
be skipped. The administration reserves the right to attend to extreme cases of poor behavior at any time.
